This one day workshop will cover the basics of decoration techniques for bisque fired clay as well as how to transfer imagery from paper (or your imagination) to the side of a pot.
We will cover:
What is glaze? What is underglaze?
Creating and layering imagery
Painting with underglaze – a layered watercolor effect
Underglaze pencils and applicators
Applying stain and glaze to texture
Underglaze transfers
Glaze application including wax resist designs
Troubleshooting glaze application
How to make your own waterslide decals
Students are encouraged to bring bisque pots and test tiles of their favorite clay. Bisque tiles and small cups or bowls made of porcelain and stoneware will also be provided.
We will start with a quick discussion of issues students have had with glazing and decorating – this will inform the order and direction of the rest of the class.
Before lunch break:
All the ways to use underglaze and underglaze products on your bisque. How to make stencils for underglaze and glaze.
After lunch break:
Glazing! Wax resist designs and stencils, different ways to apply glazes. How to layer glaze with decoration. Applying glaze and stains to texture (textured tiles will be available.) Demonstrate and discuss decals (after glaze.)
